Fleet-based PV performance analysis and benchmarking of distributed systems

LuciSun participated in the European COST Action PEARL PV, an international expert network bringing together around one hundred partners from nearly all European countries. A defining feature of the COST programme is its strong emphasis on inclusiveness, which allowed PEARL PV to integrate expertise and operational experience from southern, northern, eastern and western Europe.

This pan-European composition made PEARL PV a particularly valuable framework to consolidate lessons learned from a wide variety of climatic conditions, regulatory contexts and PV system typologies. It provided an opportunity to compare practices across countries, understand regional differences and identify common challenges related to the monitoring and assessment of distributed photovoltaic systems.

Within PEARL PV, LuciSun played a leading role as Chair of Working Group 5, which focused on the analysis of large fleets of distributed PV systems and their interaction with grid operation. The work addressed the practical challenges associated with monitoring, benchmarking and diagnosing heterogeneous PV system populations using operational data collected at scale.

The activities of Working Group 5 focused on fleet-level performance assessment, data-driven benchmarking approaches and fault detection methodologies. In this context, LuciSun coordinated work on the limitations of commonly used performance indicators when applied to large and diverse PV portfolios, and on alternative approaches based on relative performance comparisons between similar systems.

This work was closely linked to the development and application of the Performance to Peers (P2P) methodology, a benchmark-based approach to PV performance assessment and fault detection relying on statistical comparisons across PV fleets. Beyond specific methodological outcomes, PEARL PV provided a rich collaborative environment that helped LuciSun refine its understanding of large-scale PV performance analysis and informed the further development of its tools, advisory practices and training activities.
